Snowflake ornaments are one of the more sought after Christmas décor items available. Their reflection of winter and all things white is likely why people have been enamored by the snowflake for centuries.
However, ornaments of this kind haven’t been around nearly as long as the phenomenon they are named after. And doing a quick study on this ice crystal that falls from the clouds will reveal that they were not recorded in history until 135 B.C. by Chinese scholar Han Yin. Most authors documenting such wonderment always mention that they are six pointed and each one is unique unto itself, much like every human has a fingerprint unlike anyone else in the world. However, as technology has given man a way to look more closely at these snowflakes, it has been noted that not all of them are star-shaped and six-pointed. Some are in the shape of a rod, triangle, needles, columns, and much more. In fact, there are more than 35 different types of snow crystals, as they are called. But after looking at these variations, it is easy to see why the snowflake ornaments that we hang on our trees are the version that is most widely accepted.
The snowflake ornaments that we often see are a representation of the Dendrites, either the Stellar or Fernlike Stellar. These are the ones that we see hanging from the store displays or on favorite online Christmas decoration websites. These six-pointed representations are beautiful in their simplicity. They are available in a myriad of materials and with a variety of decorations on them. Some can be personalized as well, and made from metal or plaster. Some common materials that are used are different metals, plaster or plaster mix, fabric, wood, pewter, and resin. Standard adornments are glitter, faux semi-precious stones, beads and faux pearls. They can be intertwined with the other materials or assembled on top of the pieces.
The draw and appeal of snowflake ornaments are likely for their beauty. It is also because they are a way of bringing the beauty of winter into the home. They complement almost any existing décor and can be simple or very ornate. Snowflakes will fit into a log cabin theme, Victorian era, and even something modern. Since they come in various sizes, they can be incorporated into almost any area of the home’s interior and exterior. Large snow crystals can hang from the eve of the home’s exterior at different lengths, or spread along the garland draping the entry door. Inside, they can go on the tree, tucked inside garland on the mantle, around the table centerpiece, or even be a statement itself by hanging a large oversized snowflake on the wall or place it on the hearth.
