Many people use a nativity scene that is near and dear to their hearts each Christmas. It may be a set that has been passed down through the family, or one that was purchased on a special trip, or one that reminds them of their childhood. Whatever the reason, these sets come out of the box each Christmas season and take their place center stage among all the other decorations.
There is a vast array of selections on the market as well. Materials used in creating a nativity scene range from metals, glass, wood, to ceramic, mixed plaster, and even plastic, as well as fabrics of different types.
A simple set typically includes Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus. The infant may be lying in a manger or held in Mary’s arms. Some are sold with a stable as well. But beyond these figures, there are many more that someone can add to their set. 
Of course, there is the shepherd, angels, and wise men, but there is also the livestock, camels and the donkey that Mary was riding on their journey. Several manufacturers have also recreated old town Bethlehem and sell additional buildings, shrubbery and trees, and people of the town. Some of these sets can become quite elaborate.
There are some variances in how different sets are made, and many have a deeper meaning behind them. A very common selection of the nativity is with Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus with halos around their heads. This is said to depict their divinity of being the chosen earthly parents of the Messiah.
Whatever set is chosen, it is sure to be a treasured decoration for generations to come.
